Adhesives for Electric Vehicle Motors: Performance and Protection

Chase Corporation, through our HumiSeal® and Resin Designs divisions, has spent the past decade preparing protection and reliability solutions for complex electronics. Notably, within the emerging EV market, we have identified needs within the assembly of EV motors where superior adhesion and protection are particularly critical.

Adhesives in EV Motor Application

It is critical to minimize mechanical fasteners and protective housings in EV motors due to weight considerations and the speed of assembly factors. Polymeric protectants and adhesives are ideal in these circumstances. There are a number of common applications for high-performance adhesives and coatings within EV motor assemblies.

These include:

•  Adhesion and potting for permanent magnets
•  Potting of weld points in copper stators
•  Adhesion of stator assemblies to housings
•  General gap filling

EV Motor Environmental Conditions/Testing

As is common with many automotive components, many electronics (including EV motors) must withstand demanding environmental conditions over extended periods, often a decade or more, for warranty purposes. Adhesives must be tested under extreme stress to validate performance capabilities.

Testing includes:

•  Temperature range of -40C to 200C or more
•  Resistance to transmission fluids
•  Resistance to lubricating oils
•  Resistance to water and salt spray exposure
•  High bond strength to 8000 rpm

The Right Tool for the Job: HumiSeal 2E25

HumiSeal 2E25 is a high-performance, two-component epoxy designed to withstand the conditions common to EV motor assembly. The material has a relatively long open time with a fast cure possible when exposed to elevated temperatures.
